about

It was around 2003.

A few years earlier I’d picked up the guitar again after packing a bag and moving to New Zealand.

There was a girl. There is always a girl…

Writing and recording on a cheap guitar and a tape recorder in bedrooms across the world, filling up books with songs and ideas I now wanted people to actually hear them. There were a couple of websites I knew that would stream songs to like-minded fans for review. First I’d need a name.

My own surname had caused me enough trouble in one way or another over the years so what would it be? I looked at the pile of books I had been writing into on a daily basis and searched for the least popular initial on the website’s band listings. It was ‘Y’
Yearbook seemed to fit the criteria. I didn’t know it would stick…

Over the next couple of years I continued to write and record demos on shitty computers and limited resources as much as life allowed. Working with the theory that if a song is not recorded it never really exists, I tried to capture as much music as I could in any way possible.
The songs eventually seeped onto blogs, compilations, radio shows and mixtapes.

‘Wire & Wood’ was my first attempt at a real ‘ep’. Not long after recording and releasing it I was asked to open for some bands that were passing through town and eventually went on to perform my own shows. Just me, my guitar and a harmonica.

In 2007 after meeting Glen Brown and Stefan Braunias, ‘BareBones and Cabaret’ were formed. We’d consume as much of whatever we could get our hands on before, during and after gigs. We’d have practise sessions that lasted 8 hours or more and formed a brotherhood. During this time I continued to play solo shows with occasional guest spots from band members and friends. The ‘Shipwrecks’ ep came about during that time as well as the self-titled debut from ‘BareBones and Cabaret’. I’d written so many songs, we played the hell out of them taking some to entirely new realms as a band. Will we ever record the follow up album? I like to keep an open mind but won’t be counting down the days.

Now? I love most of the songs on ‘Echoes & Ghosts’ and it’s only right to give them a home. Yes, they are demos, varied in style and quality but at the now they have a place to exist. I am still writing and recording as much as possible and intend to release another 'ep' or album as soon as I can. Whether it’s as ‘Matt Yearbook’, ‘Matthew P.Schobs’, ‘BareBones and Cabaret’ or something entirely different, every song needs a home.

It’s been a ride so far…
Thanks for listening.
